Whiskey Island and Wendy Park are now part of the Cleveland Metroparks
Whiskey Island and Wendy Park opened the 2015 season as the newest addition to the Cleveland Metroparks regional park system.
“This property acquisition is an important step as Cleveland Metroparks continues its strategic focus to link people with our waterfronts,” said Brian M. Zimmerman, Cleveland Metroparks CEO. “The Park District is committed to playing a leadership role in increasing the urban vitality of our lakefront and the Cuyahoga River and spurring opportunities for economic development.”
In addition to the recent acquisition of Whiskey Island by the Cleveland Metroparks, FDL Marine, a local marina management company will assume the day-to-day operations of both the Whiskey Island Marina and the Sunset Grille (Now Whiskey Island Still & Eatery). While FDL Marine plans to open the marina and restaurant for business as usual for the upcoming summer season, it certainly won’t be without some very notable changes.
Amongst some of those changes lurking on the horizon is the renaming of the Sunset Grille to the “Whiskey Island Still and Eatery.” With an atmosphere that is reminiscence of a Prohibition-era speakeasy, FDL Marine intends to recapture the days of the Temperance Movement and embody the islands prohibition past through not only its décor, but by showcasing many of the eras golden age of cocktails made with both fresh fruit juices and exquisite liquors as well.
Joseph Anderson, CEO of FDL Marine says that “while it was a difficult decision as to if the Sunset Grille should be renamed, it was ultimately decided that such a historic moment in time that has so many thinking of the islands past, present and future, conceivably warranted an equally historic name change that would also embrace and pay homage to Whiskey Islands past, present and future.”
“Most folks are not aware that a distillery was built here in 1836, hence its name Whiskey Island” said Tim Poole - FDL Marines Project Manager. “I’m really looking forward to our guests kicking back and enjoying our free weekend summer concert series at our newly renovated outdoor patio and bar area called the Promenade. And with approximately 100 of some of the best live music and bands already scheduled to play this summer, the Promenade is surely going to be very popular.”
“We will offer a new flavorful menu with a variety of local ingredients, and our food and drink menu will be approachable, yet interesting with a wide variety of options” said Anne McCarthy - FDL Marines Operation Manager. “We are in the perfect location to embrace the neighboring businesses and residents of our community, as well as our lakefront park visitors.”
